We all like to keep our eyebrows neat and in check in a nice shape. While there are many different types of hair removal methods out there threading rests apart from all the other techniques for its precision. Though other techniques such as waxing and plucking can get the job done well enough, they won’t offer you the flawless look that threading can.

Nothing feels as good as having clear, soft skin that you can run your hand over without any hair on it. The best way to achieve your desired results is waxing. Waxing is a temporary hair removal method that removes hair straight from the root to give you soft and smooth skin. What’s great about waxing is that it takes off large amounts of hair at one time making it efficient and effective.

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) laser treatment is popularly used for various cosmetic skin treatments including hair removal, skin rejuvenation and dealing with skin diseases such as acne. The treatment is the most modern form of skin therapy and uses pinpointed medical lasers that are targeted to small areas of the skin to treat issues.

If you have ever considered having multiple shades in perfect sync running through your hair then highlights or lowlights are what you are looking for. Highlights and lowlights not only give your hair a varying range of complementary hues, but can also add depth to your hair. They are often the safer option if you aren’t in the mood to change your hair colour entirely. Elixir Salon’s stylists make sure that your highlights flow seamlessly and give your hair a brighter, livelier look.

Highlights involve lightening strands of your hair, while lowlights involve adding darker shades. Whichever one you are in search for, the experienced and capable stylists here at Elixir Salon have you covered. We can add highlights by applying lighter shades using a paste the will contain bleaching agents and lowlights with a special dye mix.

If you are in the mood for a natural look then highlights or lowlights are what you need. The Brazilian Keratin Treatment comes with many names from BKT to Brazilian Blowout to Keratin Cure and many more. No matter what the name though, the results are the same: glossy, straight hair. The best part about this amazing treatment is that the effects are instant. Elixir Salon offers its services to make your hair straight while simultaneously giving it a shine that makes it look healthy and rich. The treatment leaves you with frizz free, manageable hair that is smoother, softer and stronger than before.

Now you may have questions like what is Keratin. Well, it is an essential component of our hair which is formed by amino acids and protects our nails and skin as well. Why does it matter? It does because it is the main ingredient in the Brazilian keratin treatment. We will seal liquid keratin along with another preservative solution into the hair using a hot iron. Bonding the keratin to stands of hair will bring a glossy shine to the hair that will make it frizz free like never before. The hair becomes straight due to the added weight of the keratin which weighs down the strands and smoothes them out.

If you are concerned about any damage that the treatment may do to your hair, rest assured knowing that quite to the contrary, the treatment strengthens the hair and the keratin coats it on the outside to provide protection from the environment.

The treatment is not permanent, though. So if you change your mind and want to go back to your old hair you will only have to wait a few months to regain it. With this treatment you can enjoy the frizz free look you want while making sure your hair is still healthy and vibrant.

Hair straightening is a hair styling technique used since the 1890s involving the flattening and straightening of hair in order to give it a smooth, streamlined, and sleek appearance. It became very popular during the 1950s among black males and females of all races. It is accomplished using a hair iron or hot comb, chemical relaxers, Japanese hair straightening, Hair straightening or roller set /blow-dryers styling. In addition, some shampoos, conditioners, and hair gels can help to make hair temporarily straight.

The process is often called “rebounding” in some countries the term “rebounding” was first used in the late 1980s, which slowly spread. If done often, flat irons and chemicals can be damaging to hair. Excessive straightening often results in split ends. However, heat protectant sprays can decrease the damage.

Method:

Temporary (non-chemical treatment)
Hair being straightened with a hair iron

Hair irons and hot combs are designed to temporarily modify the shape/texture of hair. The straightened effect will usually be reversed by environmental factors, mainly contact with water from washing, rain, humidity, etc. This includes water in styling products such as gels applied after straightening, although careful use of such treatments can still produce usable results not much different from if the user had naturally straight hair before applying the product.

Overuse of heat tools can permanently alter the hair’s structure. This is known as “heat damage”. Use of protective sprays or lotions prior to heat styling may help to prevent heat damage. Once the damage has occurred, it can be disguised using various styling techniques, but not reversed. The only way to repair heat-damaged hair is to cut off the damaged hair and regrow it.

A medium length may set some restrictions on variability of hairstyles, since some ‘dos really look more advantageous on longer lengths. However, with shoulder-grazing hair you can also afford plenty of gorgeous updos which won’t ever give out your actual length. Up do hairstyles are an urgent topic for summer days when you need to keep your locks off the face and more or less organized. Besides, every formal event suggests an elegant ‘do, preferably a pulled up style. Whether you’ve dropped in to check on fresh ideas for casual looks or formal updos for shoulder-length hair, you are going to find here both. So, better take some minutes to check what we’ve found for you on the subject.

What updos are the best for medium length? It, certainly, depends on the occasion. However, we can sum up the most popular hairstyles for mid length and create a sort of summary on this topic. In brief, we can list these: buns, simple knots and French knots, braided updos and up hairstyles with tucked ends. Read further for a more detailed review.

Best Updos for Medium Length Hair

Buns. A bun is probably the easiest updo you can do yourself. With medium length hair that is not thick enough, you may lack body which eventually tells on the bun’s size. Backcombing helps to add body and visually enlarge the bun’s size.

Knots

Modern knots are rather loose and messy. Tease your hair at the roots to provide some lift around your face and make a low or high “imperfect” knot.

We all like to keep our eyebrows neat and in check in a nice shape. While there are many different types of hair removal methods out there threading rests apart from all the other techniques for its precision. Though other techniques such as waxing and plucking can get the job done well enough, they won’t offer you the flawless look that threading can. Using a string to thread out hair any and all unwanted stray hair around your eyebrows and lips can give your brow a spotless and defined shape that will change your face’s look.

The threading stylist can remove hair row by row in an accurate manner so that your eyebrows turn out in the best shape that they can. Since threading is so precise it can take care of the small, finer hairs that other forms of hair removal may miss out on. And that isn’t even the best part. Threading takes up a minimal amount of time which is around ten to fifteen minutes at most. Threading is also preferred by many as it is gentler on the skin than some other types of hair removal and can be the better option for sensitive skin.

Despite the many great things about threading a thread can be lethal in the hands of someone inexperienced. One wrong move and your entire eyebrow can be off, leaving you looking odd and at the mercy of the eyebrow pencil. Luckily, at Elixir Salon we are trained to clean up and shape your eyebrows to give you a cool and confident look. We are fast. We are precise. And we make sure you look great. We won’t just clean up the stray hair growing on your skin, but will remove the hair to leave you with a neat and defined brow line.

Removing hair through waxing gives your hair a few weeks to grow back so you can enjoy your smooth and silky skin for a while.

We at Elixir Salon can remove unwanted hair from several parts of your body including eyebrows, face, legs, arms, back, abdomen and bikini areas. Waxing is a relatively simple process and when done right causes minimal to no irritation at all. It all depends on the kind of wax combination being used and the technique of the person waxing your skin.

We spread an effective wax combination over the skin covered by hair and remove it using cloth or paper strips in swift, rapid movements. This will remove the wax along with the hair leaving behind clear, hair-free skin. The wax used can either be warm or cool, though warm is usually preferred for legs, arms and other similar areas.

Waxing also works extremely well on upper lips and eyebrows and is less painful as compared to threading. We offer all types of waxing and make sure that the wax products that we use are friendly to your skin and the wax strips are always hygienic and fresh.

Types of waxing offered at Elixir Salon:

  • Full Legs
  • Half Legs
  • Full Arms
  • Half Arms
  • Under Arms

You can pick out the colour that your prefer from our selection, and if you want a little bit of advice on what will work best then our stylists are always ready to offer their expert, professional advice.

A patch test is necessary before the treatment. It involves putting on a tiny amount of the dye onto the skin somewhere out of sight such as behind the ear or the inside of the elbow, to ensure that you are not allergic to any of the ingredients in the dye that we are using. Please call ahead to arrange the test, and why not get another one of our wonderful treatments while you’re at it?

Who doesn’t want fairer, brighter skin? Having clearer, glowing skin is something we all would love to have. Our skin is sensitive to the weather and needs care and nourishment. The sun can be harsh and often dull and darken the skin, but there are several ways to improve your skin and bring out its true colour, bleaching and whitening treatments are just one of the many. Through these effective treatments you can lighten and even get rid of blemishes, age spots and other skin conditions.

Regular skin whitening treatments can take away some of that dullness in your skin and bring out the glowing colour. No one likes dark spots, wrinkles and other marks on their face. Bleaching can help eliminate these unwanted dark spots on the skin and make your appearance bright and sparkling. Bringing out the shine in your skin isn’t all that bleaching is good for, though. It can also lighten the black hair on your face especially the upper lips so you don’t have to remove them.

Elixir Salon offers bleaching and whitening treatments with top quality products that are tried and tested to produce effective results. We offer different types of bleaching treatments such as normal, herbal, whitening and more. Simply ask us for what you want and we’ll make sure your skin looks fabulous.

It can also be great to lighten areas such as underarms that can that darken over time due to shaving. The creams that we use in your bleaching and whitening treatments are guaranteed to be skin friendly. We at Elixir Salon are committed to bringing you with the best beauty solutions.

A facial is a family of skin care treatments for the face, including steam, exfoliations, extraction, creams, lotions, facial masks, peels, and massage. They are normally performed in beauty salons, but are also a common spa treatment. They are used for general skin health as well as for specific skin conditions. Types of facials include European facial, LED light therapy facial, and mini-facials.

Facial mask

There are different kinds of masks (e.g. cactus, cucumber, etc.) for different purposes: deep-cleansing, by penetrating the pores; healing acne scars or hyper-pigmentation; brightening, for a gradual illumination of the skin tone. Some masks are designed to dry or solidify on the face, almost like plaster; others just remain wet. The perceived effects of a facial mask treatment include revitalizing, healing, or refreshing; and, may yield temporary or long-term benefits (depending on environmental, dietary, and other skincare factors).
Masks are removed by either rinsing the face with water, wiping off with a damp cloth, or peeling off of the face. Duration for wearing a mask varies with the type of mask, and manufacturer’s usage instructions. The time can range from a few minutes to overnight. Those with sensitive skin are advised to first test out the mask on a small portion of the skin, in order to check for any irritations. Some facial masks are not suited to frequent use. A glycolic mask should not be used more frequently than once a month without the risk of burning the skin.

A woman’s wedding day is something most dream of, and even plan, from the time they were little girls swinging on the playground. When the time actually arrives, a vast number of things have to be prepared and executed. One of these is choosing the perfect wedding makeup look. Doing this requires several steps, such as prepping your skin so it will look radiant, deciding who will do your makeup, and allotting time for a trial-run application (or two). It also involves learning how to properly apply makeup that’s best suited to your complexion. Start now by learning the ins and outs of achieving your end goal – a glowing face to match you, the blushing bride.

 Applying Your Makeup

 Steps:

  • Prep your skin:

Whether you’re doing your makeup yourself or not, the day of your wedding, wash your face and use a light moisturizer. Whatever your routine has been, now is not the time to change it. If you exfoliate, however, stay away from a harsh scrub and opt instead for a gentle exfoliating cleanser. If you have a blemish, dab some Visine on it but otherwise leave it alone. Your focus should be on having the clean and soft palette your makeup needs to achieve natural-looking, beautiful skin.

  • Picking Your Wedding Look

Remember it’s your wedding, not girls’ night out:

One of the biggest mistakes brides make is caking on makeup – too many layers of overly dark foundation, far too smoky eyes, lipstick that is blindingly bright in photos and so forth.

Body Treatments

A Body Treatment is a blanket term for a whole gamut of different holistic, non-medical, physical procedures aimed at helping you achieve something specific for your body. A “body treatment” could involve all sorts of things.

You might be:

  • Massaged or scrubbed with a particular oil, cream or mineral
  • Wrapped or enveloped in something – perhaps mud or seaweed or even plastic
  • Immersed or soaked in a liquid, such as water or algae
  • Stroke, treated with or exposed to something external – like brushes, magnets or electric current, or lights.

The term ‘body treatment’ refers to facials, massages, belief-related therapies, rubs – any non-medical procedure that you go to a spa or center to have.

A spa ritual or spa experience describes a package of different body treatments that you get on the same day: a massage, a facial and some Toe Therapy, say, followed by use of the sauna and a light lunch.

What is a body treatment good for?

Different body treatments are good for different things and they are usually clear about their goals.
You may have a massage to soothe your muscles and help relieve your stress.
You may have a fairly rigorous scrub to exfoliate, moisturize and reduce cellulite.
You could choose to firm up your stomach muscles and bottom by, for example, having a series of electro-magnetic pulses passed through your body.

There are two types of gel, hard gel and soft gel.
Hard gel gets its name because, once cured, it is tough enough to be made into a nail extension. Nail extensions are artificial nails created by using a nail product to extend the nail past the edge of the natural nail.

Soft gel refers to the gel products that are too soft to create a nail extension. This includes gel polishes and thicker gels meant for gel-overlay services. Gel polishes are used for the increasingly popular gel polish manicures. These manicures, when done by caring, experienced, and trained professionals, are gentle to the natural nail and the polish stays intact on the nail for at least a couple of weeks with high shine and no cracking, peeling or chipping.

The product used to create nail extensions using gel or gel nails is gel, not to be confused with acrylic nails, which are created using liquid monomer and polymerpowder. All gel services are performed using some form of gel, which usually comes in pots of gel or bottles of gel polish. Gel also comes in a variety of colors. All forms of gel require curing, or hardening, under a UV (ultraviolet) light, which can be either a conventional bulb or LED lamp.

UV curing refers to the chemical process that occurs when photoinitiators within the gel itself are exposed to the UV or blue light. The energy from the light causes certain bonds in the initiator molecules to break, forming free radicals.

Artificial nails, also known as fake nails, false nails, fashion nails, nail enhancements, nail wraps, or nail extensions, are coverings placed over fingernails as fashion accessories. Some artificial nails attempt to mimic the appearance of real fingernails as closely as possible, while other designs may deliberately stray in appearance from real fingernails. Artificial nails are made from a wide variety of materials. Unlike most manicures, artificial nails require constant upkeep, and is recommended that you get a “fill” every 2 weeks.

Types

The artificial nails are not a replacement, but an extension for natural nails. There are two main approaches to creating artificial nails—tips and forms. Tips are made of lightweight plastic plates that are “nail”-shaped. They are glued on the end of the natural nail. Then you have the choice to choose acrylic or hard gel to cover the nail. When you have chosen acrylic, gel or a combination of both is then applied over the entire nail. Tips are available in many different colors and designs. Some of the options ranging from simple colors such as yellow or blue to flamboyant designs such as animal prints and mixed metallic colors. When you get acrylic nails, forms are fitted over the nail and then an artificial nail is sculpted out of the acrylic, then properly shaped and buffed to a shine.

Nail art is a creative way to paint, decorate, enhance, and embellish the nails. It is a type of artwork that can be done on fingernails and toenails, usually after manicures or pedicures. A manicure and a pedicure are beauty treatments that trim, shape, and polish the nail. Often these procedures remove the cuticles and soften the skin around the nails.

Innovations
Velvet or sugar nails

Some brands try to innovate by creating new kinds of nail polish.

Textures:

Microbeads or caviar beads are applied just before the nail polish becomes dry. These textures give a sand-like texture to the nail.

Holographic effect: Polishes with holographic finishes give off flashy rainbow reflections when exposed to light.

Hologram nail art

Velvet manicure:

Velvet fibers called velveteen are sprinkled onto wet polish. The excess is gently brushed off, leaving behind a fuzzy velvet feel.

Crackle effect:

A crackle polish is applied onto already-painted nails and dries to a shattered or cracked effect.

Thermochromic polish:

The nail polish changes color when exposed to hot or cold temperatures.

Matte effect: These nail polishes can transform a layer of glossy nail polish into a flat matte finish.

Nail stickers:

A form of Artificial nails, there is a large range of nail stickers, strips and wraps on the market used to mimic nail polish without exposing oneself to the harmful chemicals found in polish.

Basically, the spa nail technician heats up plastic bags filled with paraffin and then eases them onto your hands and feet.

While it’s heating it also releases an aromatherapy vapor with the soothing scent of lavender from real essential oils.)

Why Is The Spa Manicure More Expensive?

It is a longer service, with more steps — an aromatic salt rub, hydrating mask, hot towel wrap, hot stone massage or paraffin dip — that make the spa manicure last longer and feel more luxurious. You are paying for a more beautiful, luxurious atmosphere.

Instead of fluorescent lights and noxious fumes from airbrushed nails, you have pretty light fixtures, good design, and a handsome pedicure chair in a quiet corner. The pedicure chair should drain (not recirculate water) so that the pedicure is completely sanitary.

You can be sure the technicians are highly experienced and give you a special experience.

They can give you beautifully shaped nails, suggest the perfect color for your skin and the season, and their work lasts — no chips or bubbles. They should have a very nice manner and follow the highest level of spa sanitation.

Most resort spas don’t offer the full robe and slipper treatment and give you access to spa facilities if you are only purchasing nail services.  If you need to save, get a spa manicure or pedicure as a special treat and do your regular maintenance at home or with a local nail or beauty salon.

A spa pedicure are more expensive than what you get at the local nail salon.

Alternatives to The Paraffin Dip

Have you ever had your foot dipped in a paraffin bath during a spa pedicure and wondered how many other people’s feet have been in there? Or how long the paraffin has been in there? Your concern is justified. Paraffin baths are one of the prime examples of cross-contamination in a spa, the transfer of fungi and bacteria. To protect yourself, look for spas that are using a single-use system called Perfectsense Paraffin Wax system.

Hijama (Arabic: حجامة‎ lit. “Sucking”) is the alternative medical procedure and Arabic term for wet cupping, where blood is drawn by vacuum from a small skin incision for therapeutic purposes. Cupping is poorly supported by scientific evidence. Whether cupping has any effect at all, even on pain is supported at best by “tentative” evidence. Any reported benefits are likely due to the placebo effort

The practice has Greek, Arab, Turkish and Persian origin and is mentioned by Hippocrates. It is reported that the Islamic prophet Muhammad (Salal’laho Alaehe Waalae’he Wasal’lam) said, “Indeed the best of remedies you have is hijama, and if there was something excellent to be used as a remedy then it is hijama.

Procedure

Clotted blood after being drawn by wet cupping.

Hijama can be performed almost anywhere on the body, often at the site of an ache or pain in order to ease or alleviate it. A more conservative approach [warns against overuse of cupping and suggests that six optimal points on the body are all that is required to “clean” the entire cardiovascular system. The location is first shaved, if necessary, to ensure a tight seal with the cup. The mouth of a cup (metal, glass and plastic cups are generally used, although traditionally horns were used) is placed on the skin at the site chosen for hijama. A tight seal is then created. The traditional method is to burn a small piece of paper or cotton inside the vessel, so that the mouth of the cup clings to the skin.

Aesthetic Treatment

Aesthetic medicine is an inclusive term for specialties that focus on improving cosmetic appearance through the treatment of conditions including scars, skin laxity, wrinkles, moles, liver spots, excess fat, cellulite, unwanted hair, skin discoloration, and spider veins. Traditionally, aesthetic medicine includes dermatology, reconstructive surgery and plastic surgery. Aesthetic medicine includes both surgical procedures (liposuction, facelifts, breast implants, Radio frequency ablation) and non-surgical procedures (radio frequency skin tightening, non surgical liposuction, chemical peel), and practitioners may utilize a combination of both. Although aesthetic medicine procedures are typically elective, they can significantly improve quality of life, psychological wellbeing and social function.

Indications

Aesthetic medicine specializes in improving cosmetic appearance. It has diverse applications for dermatological and surgical conditions. It includes indications related to minimizing signs of aging such as skin laxity, wrinkles, and liver spots. Aesthetic medicine also plays a role in the treatment of excess fat, cellulite and obesity. Laser based therapies can be indicated for the treatment of scars, unwanted hair, skin discoloration, and spider veins.
It is important that overall health is assessed by a physician to ensure that the symptom being treated (for example, weight gain and excessive hair) is not a sign of an underlying medical condition (like hypothyroidism) that should be stabilized with medical therapies. It is also very important for the medical aesthetician to be inclusive in providing a team approach for minimally invasive facial aesthetic procedures.

Microneedle may refer to :

  • Elements of a microneedle array/patch for transdermal drug delivery
  • Microneedling, a mechanical/RF skin treatment used eg for Collagen induction therapy
  • A microinjector

Plasma needling is a minimal invasive aesthetic medical procedure claiming to rejuvenate skin, reduce hyper- and hypotrophic scars as well as stretchmarks and to be able to reduce pattern hairloss by multimodal physical and biochemical cellular stimulation without the use of additional artificial substances. It basically is a combination of classical medical microneedling by Dermaroller or DermaPen, both used in Collagen induction therapy and PRP (platelet-rich plasma), the latter used in Prolotherapy as well as in the Vampire facelift. The stimulating effects on fibroblasts, cells and stemcells already shown in scientific publications regarding microneedling, and the injection of PRP, have also been tested as a combined treatment.
The term “plasma needling” began to emerge between the year 2013 and 2014. Despite the fact that plasma needling is already being performed in many clinics and practices, the efficacy of this technique has yet to be confirmed in large-scale controlled clinical trials.
Collagen Induction Therapy, also called Microneedling, is a noninvasive cosmetic medical procedure used to treat wrinkles, aging skin, scars, and stretch marks. Tiny needles are rolled across your face, puncturing the skin to promote collagen growth. Most CIT is done at a professional facility by a trained medical practitioner. If you are interested in getting Collagen Induction Therapy, learn what it entails so you can decide if it is for you.

Microblading, also known by a variety of names such as embroidery, microstroking, feather touch and hair like strokes, is a form of permanent makeup that provides a means to partially or fully camouflage missing eyebrow hair with the appearance of simulated hair using fine deposits of cosmetic tattoo pigments. Over time the strokes can blur and fade and will need to be refreshed.

Placement and design

This technique is a process that may be used to improve or create eyebrow definition, to cover gaps of lost hair, to extend the eyebrows, or may be used as a full reconstruction if the brows have little/no hair. Each microblading stroke is applied individually, allowing the tattoo artist/beauty therapist to control of the shape, color and density of the completed eyebrows.
The treatment begins with developing the desired shape, then using individual tattoo strokes or ‘feathers’ in the area to plot the shape and style requested. The color choice is patient specific and is mixed using a natural selection of micropigments to complement hair color and skin tone.

Insertion technique

Microblading is performed by depositing pigment superficially in the upper region of the dermis with the use of a hand tool with attached needles fused together in a curvilinear grouping, and may involve the use of a machine with a specially devised hygienic needle cartridge. Similar to permanent makeup brow treatments using a machine, the microblading technique involves drawing individual, crisp hair strokes that can be very natural looking. The needles used come in a variety of diameters so that the thickness of each individual hair stroke can be customized to each client depending on the width of their natural hairs as to make the microblading process look more natural.

Tooth whitening (termed tooth bleaching when utilizing bleach), is either the restoration of a natural tooth shade or whitening beyond the natural shade.
Restoration of the underlying, natural tooth shade is possible by simply removing surface stains caused by extrinsic factors such as tea, coffee, red wine and tobacco. The buildup of calculus and tartar can also influence the staining of teeth. This restoration of the natural tooth shade is achieved by having the teeth cleaned by a dental professional (commonly termed “scaling and polishing”), or at home by various oral hygiene methods. Calculus and tartar are difficult to remove without a professional clean.
To whiten the natural tooth shade, bleaching is suggested. It is a common procedure in cosmetic dentistry, and a number of different techniques are used by dental professionals. There is also a plethora of products marketed for home use to do this also. Techniques include bleaching strips, bleaching pens, bleaching gels and laser tooth whitening. Bleaching methods generally use either hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide which breaks down into hydrogen peroxide. Common side effects associated with bleaching include increased sensitivity of the teeth and irritation of the gums.

Natural tooth shade

The perception of tooth color is the result of a complex interaction of factors such as: lighting conditions, translucency, opacity, light scattering, gloss, the human eye and brain. Teeth are composed of a surface enamel layer, which is whiter and semitransparent, and an underlying dentin layer, which is darker and less transparent.

Botulinum toxin (BTX) is a neurotoxic protein produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum and related species. It prevents the release of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine from axon endings at the neuromuscular junction and thus causes flaccid paralysis. Infection with the bacterium causes the disease botulism. The toxin is also used commercially in medicine, cosmetics and research.
Botulinum is the most acutely lethal toxin known, with an estimated human median lethal dose (LD50) of 1.3–2.1 ng/kg intravenously or intramuscularly and 10–13 ng/kg when inhaled.
There are eight types of botulinum toxin, named type A–H. Type A and B are capable of causing disease in humans, and are also used commercially and medically. Types C–G are less common; types E and F can cause disease in humans, while the other types cause disease in other animals. Type H is considered the deadliest substance in the world – an injection of only 2-billionths of a gram can cause death to an adult. Botulinum toxin types A and B are used in medicine to treat various muscle spasms and diseases characterized by overactive muscle. The commercial form is marketed under the brand name Botox, among others.

Medical uses

Muscle spasticity:
Botulinum toxin is used to treat a number of disorders characterized by overactive muscle movement, including post-stroke spasticity, post-spinal cord injury spasticity, spasms of the head and neck, eyelid, vagina, limbs, jaw, and vocal cords. Similarly, botulinum toxin is used to relax clenching of muscles, including those of the oesophagus, jaw, lower urinary tract and bladder, or clenching of the anus which can exacerbate anal fissure. It may also be used for improper eye alignment. Botulinum toxin appears to be effective for refractory overactive bladder.

Derma filler (injectable cosmetic filler, injectable facial filler) is a soft tissue filler injected into the skin to help fill in facial wrinkles, restoring a smoother appearance. Most of these wrinkle fillers are temporary because they are eventually absorbed by the body. Some people may need more than one injection to achieve the wrinkle-smoothing effect. The effect lasts for about six months or longer. Successful results depend on health of the skin, skill of the health care provider, type of filler used.

Materials used

Fillers are made of sugar molecules or composed of hyaluronic acids, collagens, which may come from pigs, cows, cadavers, or may be generated in a laboratory, the person’s own transplanted fat, and biosynthetic polymers. Examples of the latter include calcium hydroxylapatite, polycaprolactone, polymethylmethacrylate, and polylactic acid.

How it works

Dermal fillers, also known as “injectable” or “soft-tissue fillers,” do just what their name suggests: they fill in the area under the skin. Some fillers are natural and some are synthetic, but they all work to improve the appearance of aging skin in the following ways:

  • filling in wrinkles, fine lines and deep creases
  • improving other imperfections like scars
  • filling out thin or wrinkled lips
  • plumping up cheeks
  • contouring the jaw line and other areas of the face

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is a concentrate of platelet-rich plasma protein derived from whole blood, centrifuged to remove red blood cells. It has a greater concentration of growth factors than whole blood, and has been used to encourage a brisk healing response across several specialties, in particular dentistry, orthopedics and dermatology.
As a concentrated source of blood plasma and autologous conditioned plasma, PRP contains several different growth factors and other cytokines that can stimulate healing of soft tissue and joints. Main indication in sports medicine and orthopedics are acute muscle strains, tendinopathy and muscle-fascial injuries and osteoarthritis. Main indications in dermatology for PRP are androgenic alopecia, wound healing, and skin rejuvenation. For preparation of PRP, various protocols are used, with an underlying principle of concentrating platelets to 3–5 times physiological levels, then injecting this concentrate in the tissue where healing is desired.

Medical use:

In humans, PRP has been investigated and used as a clinical tool for several types of medical treatments, including chronic tendinitis, osteoarthritis, for bone repair and regeneration, in oral surgery, and in plastic surgery, for example using a platelet-rich fibrin matrix method.

Clinical validity:

In the field of aesthetics and plastic surgery, the clinical application is particularly wide and is under the name of Regenerative Plastic Surgery.

PDO ThreadLift
Mini-Facelift Without Surgery:

Advances in non-surgical aesthetics now allow lower face and jowl-lifts to be performed with minimal intervention.
The PDO Thread-Lift is the latest technique at the clinic for lifting the face, neck, arms, legs, buttocks -without surgery. PDO – Polydioxanone is a material used in medicine and surgery for over 40 years and is very safe.
PDO Lifts (non-surgical procedure) last for up to 18 to 24 months and are used for jowl-lift, neck smoothing, eye-lift, nose-to-mouth lines, bingo-wings on the arms, knee & legs re-shaping.
The PDO Threadlift procedure involves no cutting, no stitches, no downtime and minimal discomfort. The jowls, neck or any other areas, are ‘lifted’ due to the special threads which disappear after 60-90 days.
The ‘lift’ of the tissues is maintained for the one and a half to two years due to new collagen formation stimulated by the PDO (Polydioxanone) threads.
Until recently procedures to lift the jowls, cheeks, neck and eyes required surgery. Now however this new procedure is available and is ‘non-surgical’.
PDO threads stimulate the body to produce new collagen after 3-4 weeks and they dissolve completely after around 6 months.
These threads last longer than Dermal Fillers and wrinkle-relaxing treatments, and are seen as a valuable addition to the non-surgical facial and body re-juvenation treatments we offer here at the clinic.
The PDO technique is no more invasive than an injection.

Varicose veins are veins that have become enlarged and twisted. The term commonly refers to the veins on the leg, although varicose veins can occur elsewhere. Veins have pairs of leaflet valves to prevent blood from flowing backwards (retrograde flow or venous reflux). Leg muscles pump the veins to return blood to the heart (the skeletal-muscle pump), against the effects of gravity. When veins become varicose, the leaflets of the valves no longer meet properly, and the valves do not work (valvular incompetence). This allows blood to flow backwards and they enlarge even more. Varicose veins are most common in the superficial veins of the legs, which are subject to high pressure when standing. Besides being a cosmetic problem, varicose veins can be painful, especially when standing. Severe long-standing varicose veins can lead to leg swelling, venous eczema, skin thickening (lipodermatosclerosis) and ulceration. Although life-threatening complications are uncommon, varicose veins may be confused with deep vein thrombosis, which may be life-threatening.

Non-surgical treatments include sclerotherapy, elastic stockings, leg elevation and exercise. The traditional surgical treatment has been vein stripping to remove the affected veins. Newer, less invasive treatments which seal the main leaking vein are available. Alternative techniques, such as ultrasound-guided foam sclerotherapy, radiofrequency ablation and endovenous laser treatment, are available as well. Because most of the blood in the legs is returned by the deep veins, the superficial veins, which return only about 10{5b2ff6c53f032253f309186c2ac165b12533c4e45998cf0522cee714c86b21de} of the total blood of the legs, can usually be removed or ablated without serious harm.

Diode Laser

A laser diode, also known as an injection laser or diode laser, is a semiconductor device that produces coherent radiation (in which the waves are all at the same frequency and phase) in the visible or infrared (IR) spectrum when current passes through it. Laser diodes are used in optical fiber systems, compact disc (CD) players, laser printers, remote-control devices, and intrusion detection systems.
Laser diodes differ from conventional lasers, such as the helium-neon (He-Ne), ruby, and gas types, in several ways.

Small size and weight:

A typical laser diode measures less than one millimeter across and weighs a fraction of a gram, making it ideal for use in portable electronic equipment.

Low current, voltage, and power requirements:

Most laser diodes require only a few milliwatts of power at 3 to 12 volts DC and several milliamperes. Therefore, they can operate using small battery power supplies.

Low intensity:

A laser diode cannot be used for spectacular purposes such as burning holes in metal, bringing down satellites, or blinding aircraft pilots. Nevertheless, its coherent output results in high efficiency and ease of modulation for communications and control applications.

Wide-angle beam:

A laser diode produces a “cone” rather than a “pencil” of visible light or IR, although this “cone” can be collimated using convex lenses.

A laser diode, also known as an injection laser or diode laser, is a semiconductor device that produces coherent radiation (in which the waves are all at the same frequency and phase) in the visible or infrared (IR) spectrum when current passes through it.

Laser hair removal is the process of removing unwanted hair by means of exposure to pulses of laser light that destroy the hair follicle. It had been performed experimentally for about twenty years before becoming commercially available in the mid-1990s. Laser hair removal is widely practiced in clinics, and even in homes using devices designed and priced for consumer self-treatment. Many reviews of laser hair removal methods, safety, and efficacy have been published in the dermatology literature.

How it works

The primary principle behind laser hair removal is selective photothermolysis (SPTL), the matching of a specific wavelength of light and pulse duration to obtain optimal effect on a targeted tissue with minimal effect on surrounding tissue. Lasers can cause localized damage by selectively heating dark target matter, melanin, thereby heating up the basal stem cells in the follicle which causes hair growth, the follicle, while not heating the rest of the skin. Light is absorbed by dark objects but reflected by light objects and water, so laser energy can be absorbed by dark material in the hair or skin, with much more speed and intensity than just the skin without any dark adult hair or melanin.
Melanin is considered the primary chromophore for all hair removal lasers currently on the market. Melanin occurs naturally in the skin and gives skin and hair their color. There are two types of melanin in hair. Eumelanin gives hair brown or black color, while pheomelanin gives hair blonde or red color.

Skinrejuvenation is a skin treatment that uses lasers, intense pulsed light, or photodynamic therapy to treat skin conditions and remove effects of photoaging such as wrinkles, spots, and textures. The process induces controlled wounds on the skin, prompting it to heal itself by creating new cells. This process reverses the signs of photoaging to a certain extent by removing appearances of damage.

Skin rejuvenation:
Skin rejuvenation can be achieved through various modalities including: thermal, chemical, mechanical, injection, and light.

  • Thermal rejuvenation using a radio-frequency device to induce a thermal effect in the skin.
  • Chemical rejuvenation with chemical peels.
  • Photo rejuvenation with light pulses from lasersor lamps.
  • Mechanical rejuvenation by dermabrasionor microneedling damage the outer layers to promote skin regrowth.
  • Injections for rejuvenation with botox, fillers, collagen.
Intense pulsed light:

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) uses flashlamps to produce high intensity light over broad visible and infrared wavelengths with filters that select the desired range. IPL is used to treat dyschromia, rosacea, melasma, acne, photodamage, vascular and pigmented lesions, and rhytides. Studies have noted that exposing cells to direct heat can cause DNA damage not only in those cells but also in surrounding tissue that was not directly exposed, and concluded treatments can cause microscopic thermal injuries and that further research is warranted.
IPL has become a popular treatment and is effective for pigmentation and telangiectasias, but has lesser results for wrinkles. The procedure is quick, safe and well tolerated.

Skin pigmentation disorders affect the color of your skin. Your skin gets its color from a pigment called melanin. Special cells in the skin make melanin. When these cells become damaged or unhealthy, it affects melanin production.
Many forms of hyperpigmentation are caused by an excess production of melanin.

Hyperpigmentation

Hyperpigmentation can be diffuse or focal, affecting such areas as the face and the back of the hands. Melanin is produced by melanocytes at the lower layer of the epidermis. Melanin is a class of pigment responsible for producing colour in the body in places such as the eyes, skin, and hair. As the body ages, melanocyte distribution becomes less diffuse and its regulation less controlled by the body. UV light stimulates melanocyte activity, and where concentration of the cells is greater, hyperpigmentation occurs. Another form of hyperpigmentation is post inflammatory hyperpigmentation. These are dark and discoloured spots that appear on the skin.

Hyperpigmentation is associated with a number of diseases or conditions, including the following:

  • Addison’s disease and other sources of adrenal insufficiency, in which hormones that stimulate melanin synthesis, such as melanocyte-stimulating hormone (MSH), are frequently elevated.
  • Cushing’s disease or other excessive adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) production, because MSH production is a byproduct of ACTH synthesis from proopiomelanocortin (POMC).
  • Acanthosis nigricans — hyperpigmentation of intertriginous areas associated with insulin resistance.
  • Melasma, also known as chloasma — patchy hyperpigmentation
  • Acne scarring from post-inflammatary hyperpigmentation
  • Linea nigra — a hyperpigmented line found on the abdomen during pregnancy.
  • Peutz-Jeghers syndrome — an autosomal dominant disorder characterized by hyperpigmented macules on the lips and oral mucosa and gastrointestinal polyps.
  • Exposure to certain chemicals such as salicylic acid, bleomycin, and cisplatin.
  • Smoker’s melanosis
  • Coeliac disease
  • Cronkite-Canada syndrome
  • Porphyria
  • Tinea fungal infections such as ringworm

Years ago, teenagers with acne were told to cut out the potato chips and given a tube of Clearasil. Today, we know far more about the reasons why some people develop acne and how it can most effectively be treated.
All cases of acne are not created equal, and neither are all acne treatments. Although all acne has its roots in the same process — hormonal fluctuations that stimulate oil production — not all acne is equally severe and not all cases of acne will respond to the same types of treatments.
Most cases of acne fit within one of three main categories.
Comedonal acne. This is the kind of mild acne that involves blackheads and whiteheads. It forms because a component of skin oil called sebum, along with old skin cells, block the pores of the skin. Comedonal acne appears most often on the forehead, nose, and chin.

Inflammatory acne

This form of acne occurs when the area just under the “plug” (the blackhead or whitehead) becomes reddened and inflamed.
Cystic acne . The most severe form of acne, cystic acne develops as the result of an actual infection in the area of the outbreak. Cystic acne often runs in families. It’s often very painful and can result in disfiguring, permanent scarring.
The type of treatment that works for you will depend both on the kind of acne you have, and the additional factors that seem to trigger acne outbreaks.
